Helping you to avoid the threat of gum disease
Many people associate tooth-related issues with decay. However, it’s gum disease that is most responsible for avoidable tooth loss in adult patients. It’s our mission to help ensure our patients are aware of this so they can take action to protect teeth, gums, health, and general well-being.
Gum disease is linked to a variety of other health conditions, including heart disease, diabetes and dementia, so it’s worth remembering that protecting your gums also means you’re protecting your overall health too.
What happens during a hygienist appointment?
Everyone’s hygienist experience will be different, as no two people have the same risk factors for gum disease or at-home maintenance routine. You can expect a hygienist appointment to involve some or all of the following:
Asking you about any abnormalities you may have noticed
We will ask you about symptoms like bleeding gums, changes to your bite you may have noticed and increased tooth sensitivity. Your hygienist will also examine your mouth for symptoms you may not have noticed, like gum recession and dental erosion.
Scale and polish
Most patients will require this, as it’s normal to have even just a very small amount of plaque and tartar build-up on your teeth over time.
Examine your gum disease risk factors
We will ask you if you would like to discuss your lifestyle with us so we can identify what could be causing plaque, tartar, and other gum disease-related symptoms.
Diagnose gum disease
During your appointment, we will identify if gum disease has occurred and how far this has progressed. Once we understand which stage this is at, a plan can be formulated to reduce symptoms so that your underlying bone and gum structures do not deteriorate any further. This may involve inviting you back for ongoing treatment.

We had the dentist come to nursery to speak to our pre school children for national oral health day. The staff were amazing with the children talking to them and showing them how to clean their teeth correctly.
My first dentist appointment in 5 years. Always been a very nervous patient and the last dentist I saw made me feel so horrific about myself and I've been petrified since. Today was so totally different. Both staff in the room made me feel comfortable, I became upset as soon as they called my name and they sat me down with a glass of water, told me to forget about the appointment for a moment and had little chat to help calm me down. They asked if I was with someone and then fetched my husband from the waiting room to make me feel more comfortable. They were incredibly compassionate and made me feel more at ease than I've ever felt in my life at a dentist. Everything was explained to me clearly and they've made me feel so much better about my dental situation that I cried again from relief. Been today 1st time Zara and her assistant , I've got to say never mind the building is beautiful clean.the service I have to say is best EVER I've been in my 50 odd years and maybe 25 dentist from here to London. To be honest, the treatment staff is very respectful, welcoming and friendly, and they offer and implement the best suggestions for treating your teeth, they follow the hygiene tips well, and they try to make your appointment as soon as possible. Not my usual dentist but I was away from home when I chipped my front tooth and wanted it fixed asap. I managed to get an emergency dentist appt at Ashbourne road dental at short notice hoping for a temporary solution until I was back home and could see my own dentist. Not only was I able to be seen but I actually had a high quality painless and permanent fix on the day at a very reasonable price. Fantastic service that exceeded all expectations from Dr Hasaan and the rest of the staff were extremely friendly too. I don't live in Derby so probably won't be back but I would recommend this practice to anyone that does :)
I was not one that enjoyed going to the dentist, but since being at this practice it has been so much more easier. My dentist (Dr Rahman) makes me feel at ease and explains any treatment that might be needed. All the staff are great and helpful.

Absolutely outstanding and highly recommended. Starting out last November 2022 as a very nervous patient, I am now confident when visiting the Dental Practice, where I have had several procedures including dental implants. I was seen promptly and was dealt with kindness and courtesy. It was explained that esthetically my implants would look better if I had a graft onto the lower gum. I said I was not interested however as the lower teeth were not visible at any time, even when laughing, so the Dentist was happy to proceed on the basis that the implants would be visible, but only to me! I was then given an appointment for the proper teeth to be fitted after numerous photos were taken.

Absolutely amazing, I have never been more at ease for a dental procedure. I have autism and ADHD and never have I found a dental practise so welcoming and understanding. They listened to what I needed and adapted accordingly. No pain, clear instructions, friendly staff and very prompt appointments.
